Music - More than meets the ear

Music2 min read

Music is one of those universal things that everyone knows about, and because of its high availability, like electricity and clean water, we often forget about the wonders of it. Music, for myself, has always been there. From a kids version of a casette player in 2002, to iPod touches in 2008, to today, I have always had music at the palm of my hand. And I believe this is how I have lost touch with music, and the wonder of God's creation in music.

Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth! Serve the Lord with gladness! Come into his presence with singing!

Know that the Lord, he is God! It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.

Enter his gates with thanksgiving, and his courts with praise! Give thanks to him; bless his name!

For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.

Psalm 100

This Psalm is something that God has been stirring in my soul for a little over 4 months. Music is simply something I've neglected to recognize as a tool to honor God. So, for the Dykstra family, music is something we try to use corporately to worship him - even on the normal nights, to put our hearts into the correct posture before God. This comes in the form of a song or two after dinner, which seemed embarrassing at first for someone who has no background in singing with purpose. But through God's mercy, he has removed that wall in my heart, using Tess to help me feel comfortable, not judged, and has helped me focus on the reason why we sing - because the Lord is good! It is great, that the Psalmist tells us to praise him, it does not tell us to be silent. By singing a song after dinner, with joy in our hearts, I feel God using his word to work through us in a way that will allow me to participate in the movement that will proclaim "his faithfulness to all generations."
